De smaak van Belizean Bier

Het is eind april als ik op mijn "Reef slippers" over de zandwegen van het eiland Caye Caulker loop. Het eiland ligt op zo’n 16 mijl noord-oost van Belize City en geeft een warme uitstraling. Het eerste liedje wat in je opkomt, is “Don’t worry be happy” Geen wonder dat veel backpackers dit als hun laatste stop van de vakantie zien, voordat ze het vliegtuig naar huis nemen.

Nadat wij onze koffers op onze kamer van het “Ocean Pearl Royale Hotel” hebben gezet, is het tijd om naar de Split te lopen. Dit is het meest bekende strand op het eiland en heeft een gezellige bar. Reggae muziek klinkt uit de luidsprekers en mensen staan in het water met een Barrel One rum mix of een biertje. Mijn keuze is makkelijk want op weg van de internationale luchthaven naar Caye Caulker zag ik een glimp van de Belikin Brouwerij (Belize Brewing Company).


De Belize Brewery Company is de enige brouwerij in het land en is eigendom van de familie Bowen. Deze familie is onder andere ook de eigenaar van de lucratieve Coca-Cola frisdrank franchise bottelerij.

In de zeventiger jaren was er nog een andere brouwerij, die van de broers Arturo en Orlando Matus. De Charger brouwerij was zo populair aan het worden dat de familie Bowen aktie ondernam en alle lege bierflessen van Charger opkocht. Hierdoor werd het bottelen van het bier onmogelijk gemaakt. Hierna deed de familie Bowen in 1977 een bod wat de broers niet konden weigeren.

Belikin betekent “Weg naar het Oosten” in de Maya taal en  het etiket heeft de Maya tempel 'Althun Ha' als logo.
De brouwerij brouwt vier bieren: 1) Lighthouse, 2) Belikin Regular, 3) Belikin Premium and 4) Belikin Stout. Daarnaast bottelt de brouwerij de Guinness Stout voor de Belizeaanse markt. Lighthouse is een licht verfrissende pilsner en de Belizeanen zeggen dat deze op het oude Charger bier lijkt. De Belikin Regular is een gewone pilsner maar zeker niet verkeerd. Belikin Premium wordt hoofdzakelijk voor de export gebrouwen en ook deze pilsner is smaakvol. Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat de Premium in 2010 de derde plaats op een internationale biercompetitie in de Verenigde Staten behaalde. Het enige wat ik diverse Belizeanen moest vertellenis: Drink je Stout niet te koud.

Naast het Belizeaanse merk zijn er ook nog andere goede bieren verkrijgbaar. De meest populaire buitenlandse merken zijn Heineken uit Nederland en Red Stripe uit Jamaica. Daarnaast zijn er paar overheerlijke Stouts verkrijgbaar met namen als: Banks Milk Stout, Dragon Stout en Dragon Stout Spitfire.

Mijn eerste gedachte was: Hoe kunnen mensen een Stout drinken bij temperaturen hoger dan 30˚ Celcius en luchtvochtigheid van meer dan 90%? Maar in combinatie met het genieten van de omgeving en het kijken naar mensen is dit goed te doen.

Op de meeste plaatsen waar ik mijn biertje bestelde, kreeg ik dit in een flesje maar ik weet uit eerdere bezoeken dat grotere hotels en restaurants het Belikin bier op de tap hebben.
Sinds dit jaar geeft de Belize Brewing Company biertours.
Zelf ben ik er niet aan toegekomen maar ik weet dat touroperators het aanbieden voor de passagiers van de Cruiseschepen die Belize aandoen. Kom je wel in Belize maar niet met een cruiseschip en wil je een tour maken, zorg er dan voor dat je de woensdagen vermijdt. Dit is namelijk de drukste dag wat betreft bezoekers van de schepen.

Taste of Belizean Beer

It is the end of April while I am walking with my Reef flip flops over the sandy roads on the Island Caye Caulker. The Island is located just 16 miles North East from Belize City and has a marvelous vibe: relax and be happy. No wonder that a lot of backpackers often use this as their final stop before they take the plane home.

After dropping off our bags at “Ocean Pearl Royale Hotel” it is time to walk up to the Split. The Split is the most wel-know beach with a inviting bar. Reggae music is playing and people are standing in the water with a Barrel One rum rum mix or a beer. My choice is easy; on my way from the International airport to Caye Caulker, I saw a glimpse of the Belikin Brewery (Belize Brewing Company).

Belize Brewery Company is the only brewery in the country and is owned by the Bowen family. They are the same folks who own businesses in Belize like the lucrative Coca-Cola soft drink franchise beverage plant. In the early seventies, there was also a second brewery owned by Arturo and Orlando Matus. Charger Brewery was becoming so popular that Bowen bought all the empty bottle’s from Charger so that they were unable to sell any beer. Belize Brewery took over Charger in 1977.

Belikin means "Road to the East" in the Mayan language and the logo shows the Maya temple Altun Ha. The brewery produces four kinds of beer; 1) Lighthouse, 2) Belikin regular, 3) Belikin premium and 4) Belikin Stout. Next to this they bottle the Guinness Stout for the Belize market. Lighthouse is a refreshing light pilsner and the Belizean people tell us that this tastes just like the old Charger beer. The Belikin Regular is a normal pilsner but not bad. Belikin Premium is a pretty good pilsner and is mainly brewed for export. It is no wonder that the beer won the third place at an international beer festival in The States. The only thing I always have to tell the Belizeans; Do not drink your Stout to cold.
Next to the Belizean brand there are some other decent beers on the market. The most popular brands are Heineken from the Netherlands and Red Stripe from Jamaica. Some smaller players are truly tasty Stouts as: Banks, Dragon Stout and Dragon Stout Spitfire.

First I wondered: “How can people drink Stout with an outside temperature of around 100 Fahrenheit and the humidity of more than 90%”?  After a lovely time enjoying the scenery, I can say it is pleasant.
The most places where I ordered my beer served it in a bottle, but from my previous visits I know that the bigger hotels and restaurants have Belikin beer on draft.

Since this year the Belize Brewing Company started with brewery tours. It did not fit in my schedule but I know that there are tour operators who promote this trip for passengers from the cruise ships. If you are planning a brewery tour, please note that Wednesday is the day to avoid. This is the busiest day in Belize regarding Cruise ships.
