Welkom op het blog van Beer Aficionados.

'Beer' is het Engels voor 'bier'. Tot zover snap ik het. Maar wat is nu een aficionado? Wij kunnen ons voorstellen dat die vraag in je opkomt. Vandaar eerst maar even deze korte uitleg.  Aficionado komt van het Latijnse woord affectio. Dit zie je ook terug in het Engelse woord affection en het Spaanse aficionar. Dit staat voor: positieve emoties en gevoelens. Een aficionado is iemand die veel weet over, houdt van, waardeert en veelvuldig interesse toont in een bepaald onderwerp. Als het onderwerp dat 'Bier' is, dan weet je wel ongeveer waar wij het over gaan hebben.

Wij dat zijn Paul en Jan Ronald. Paul woont in de buurt van San Fransisco in Amerika en ik, Jan Ronald, woon in Amsterdam, Nederland. Beiden zijn we Nederlanders en fanatieke bierliefhebbers. Wij kennen elkaar via een gezamenlijke vriend op Facebook. Zij dacht dat wij het wel dezelfde interesses hebben en daar heeft ze gelijk in gehad. Op Facebook hebben we veel contact en toen Paul laatst op familiebezoek was in Nederland hebben we samen een paar biertjes gedronken in Amsterdam. Uit deze ontmoeting is vlak daarna is het idee ontstaan om een tweetalig bierblog te gaan schrijven. Ik zie hier in Nederland op dit moment een duidelijke opkomst van Amerikaanse bieren in de (bier)winkels en Paul merkt dat er in Amerika steeds meer Nederlands bier te koop is van met name wat kleinere Nederlandse brouwerijen zoals bijvoorbeeld Emelisse uit Kamperland en Brouwerij De Molen uit Bodegraven.
Wij gaan ons bezighouden met alles wat er op biergebied in beide landen gebeurt en gaan op zoek naar de overeenkomsten en natuurlijk ook de verschillen. Wij zullen ongetwijfeld af en toe een uitstapje maken naar andere landen of onderwerpen bespreken die niet specifiek een Nederlands-Amerikaanse connectie hebben. Maar altijd zal het gaan over 'BIER'.

‘Beer’ is the easy part. But what is an aficionado? We can imagine that you ask yourself this question. Therefore, first of all, a short explanation.

Aficionado comes of the Latin word: affectio. The English use affection and the Spanish aficionar. This stands for: positive emotions and feelings. An aficionado is someone who loves, knows a lot of,  appreciates and shows great interest  in a certain subject. Well, the subject is beer so now you know what you can expect from us.

We are Paul and Jan Ronald. Paul lives in the San Fransisco Bay Area in America and I, Jan Ronald, live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We are both Dutch guys and beer enthusiasts. We know each other through a common friend on Facebook. She thought that we might share the same interests and she was right about that. We have regular contact on Facebook and when Paul visited family in the Netherlands, we met in Amsterdam and had a couple of beers together. After this meeting, the idea had risen to write a bilingual beer-blog together. Lately there is a clear rise of American beers in the (beer)shops in the Netherlands and Paul sees that there is more and more Dutch beer available in America, especially from little Dutch breweries like Emelisse (from Kamperland) and Brouwerij de Molen  (from Bodegraven).

We’ll write about everything that’s interesting or happening around beer in both countries. We will look for similarities and of course for differences. From time to time we will write about other countries or discuss things which are not specifically Dutch-American.
But it will always concern BEER.
